Longitudinal Shear in Wooden Beams

In this study, the relationship between longitudinal shear strength and block shear strength in southern pine indicated that the block shear test is not suited for determining longitudinal shear strength. To obtain shear failure in a majority of the test beams, a rectangular beam was run through a shaper to obtain an I beam. Of the 44 test beams, 22 were laminated from nominal 1-inch lumber while the remaining 22 were from solid 2-inch lumber. The lumber used averaged 10 percent moisture content and had a specific gravity of 0.53 based on OD weight and volume at test. The laminated and the solid beams showed no marked difference in shear strength. Inspection of data shows that block shear strength was similar for the two planes of shear (radial and tangential) while the longitudinal shear was greater in the radial than tangential plane. A correlation analysis failed to indicate any significant correlation between the beam shear and the block shear values.
