The effect of size on longitudinal shear strength of timber beams is studied on the basis of data obtained in an extensive testing program. Test results verify that longitudinal shear strength of beams is lower than shear strength as measured in shear block tests and that beam shear strength is related to size. A relationship between shear strength and sheared area for a beam 3 inches wide is proposed, together with a relationship between shear strength and volume under shear. (8 ref., 5 tables, 4 illus.)
