In search for a low cost measuring system that would allow automatic measurement of deformation for a large number of test specimens to study the long-term behavior of timber joints, a differential potentiometric measuring system was designed and implemented to automatically measure the joint slip in each individual specimen and facilitate the storing of this information by a computer. Two linear motion PL40 potentiometers wired in series, which provided a summed output, was an economical and effective way of measuring unsymmetrical joint deformation.
