Future hardwood log processing systems will be versatile. Emphasis on improved conversion efficiency will result in larger hardwood mills (150 to 200 MBF/shift) more centrally located to the resource. High log transportation costs will limit log merchandizing to the harvesting site or the log yard of the processing center. The log breakdown procedure will be sawing. Microprocessors will provide increasing levels of direct process control. Scanners and sensing equipment will characterize internal and external log defects, measure log volume, and code this information for computer applications. Reduced kerf and increased saw blade stability for both circular and bandsaws will be accomplished using electromagnetic and heat induction saw guides and dynamic tensioning devices.
