Decorative laminates of improved and uniform machining quality were developed after a comprehensive study showed that abrasive agents in the laminating papers were the sole reason for machining problems. Decor papers contained abrasive pigments; kraft core papers contained small amounts (0.04 percent) of residual sand particles which caused disproportionately severe tool damage. The relative contribution of decor and core papers to tool wear was determined. Photomicrographs from, the field and the laboratory documented the attack on both tool steel and tungsten carbide cutters. A wear index based upon the amount of steel cutter wear under standardized conditions was used to as sure paper quality. Furniture manufacturers using the new products reported reduced down-time.
