Since considerable variation in pulping results are attributable to raw material, heartwood and springwood content and permeability of the wood should be considered in pulping Douglas-fir, particularly by either the Magnefite or acid sulfite processes. Magnefite pulping appears to have promise for utilization of chips from Douglas-fir residue. Magnefite Douglas-fir pulps are superior to acid sulfite pulps both in strength and in yield, and the recovery aspect offers an additional advantage. Although strength is lower than for Douglas-fir kraft pulps, the yield is higher, and capital and operating costs lower. Also, there is no problem of odor control. Magnesium base sulfite is the only sulfite-recovery system having commercial-size operations of sufficiently long standing to clearly establish economic data
