Hardwood lumber is used extensively in applications in which mechanical properties (strength and stiffness) are important to the consumer. Generally, the hardwoods are not stress graded. Four essential elements are described to achieve official acceptance of stress-graded hardwoods in the market: 1) identifying the market, 2) defining the grades, 3) assigning properties, and 4) providing for official acceptance. The elements are applied in a step-by-step manner–starting with the market identification and ending with acceptance. Final acceptance in the United States is by the regulatory agency.
