A signal processing system was developed so that the commercial slope-of-grain indicator could effectively measure general slope of grain in dimension lumber. This general slope of grain measurement was not materially affected by the presence of knots. Correlation coefficients between machine-measured and apparent slope of grain for 384 pieces of 2- by 4- by 21-inch spruce lumber were 0.94 and 0.83 for wide face and narrow face measurements, respectively. Therefore, the machine should be suitable for commercial applications in the field of lumber grading.
