An extensive review of literature related to measurement of wood surfaces showed that many widely varying techniques have been used. Three methods predominate-visual, light sectioning, and stylus tracing. To date, no system, has been completely satisfactory for wood and no standard surfacing measuring method exists. This paper concludes that a method should be developed that will be rugged, easy to use, and give reproducible results. It should be capable of measuring profiles up to several inches in length and have a depth and sensitivity range suitable for rough sawn as well as finely finished surfaces. In addition to development of the profile-measuring apparatus, a system of analysis is required. Such an analysis system must yield characterizing data that can be meaningfully related to subsequent processing or performance.
