Adhesive, systems used in the wood industry are becoming increasingly shorter in pot life, some being only 30 seconds. These adhesives require sophisticated meter-mix hardware. The hardware must meter the two adhesive components within tolerance limits of ?2 percent and not plug up during continuous operation or during the on-off cycles involved in many processes. Positive displacement pistons have been found to be the only satisfactory metering system suitable for production in mills. Static mixing heads and a specially designed chamber for bringing the two components into contact, combined with air-solvent flushing techniques, result in plug-free mixing. Air driven mechanical mixing heads are not satisfactory for pot lives under 15 minutes. The equipment may be automated as much as required to fit tully automated processes. A list of 20 recommendations on designing meter-mix equipment is included.
