Methyl bromide fumigation was investigated as a means to control discolorations in red alder and western hemlock. Freshly sawn red alder and western hemlock logs were fumigated in a commercial pest control facility. Discolorations were monitored in the logs and in lumber produced from both fumigated and control logs over 2 weeks. Methyl bromide fumigation prevented discolorations in red alder under drying conditions but discoloration of western hemlock was not prevented in freshly felled log sections or in lumber with existing endstain.
