Models and Analysis in the Physics of Fibrous Materials

Four models were proposed as a means of describing in simple manner the essential characteristics of the macroscopic geometry of fibrous materials. Three were continuum models and the fourth was a component model. It was emphasized that the model employed for a particular problem should be selected only after careful consideration of the nature and demands of the problem. Two modes of analysis were proposed for attacking problems in the physics of fibrous materials; distributed parameter and lumped-parameter. The parallel characteristics of the two methods were emphasized completely through to their mathematical representation. Finally, steady-state plane diffusion was used to exemplify the two modes of analysis.
