Modified Powdered Spent Sulfite Liquor as Binder for Exterior Waferboard

Spent sulfite liquor, modified with a strong moneral acid, can be used as a resin binder for exterior grade waferboard. Medium density, 3/8-inch, poplar waferboards bonded with 4 to 5 percent powdered, spent sulfite liquor and less than 1 percent sulfuric acid, met the mechanical strength requirements of CSA Standard 0188 (68). A waferboard plant of 300-ton daily capacity could save up to $1 million per year, with the modified spent liquor. Possibly some minor modification in processing equipment would be required because of the acidity of this new type of binder.
