This paper is concerned with the relations of moisture to wood of longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, loblolly pine, slash pine, pitch pine, pond pine, Virginia pine, table-mountain pine, sand pine, and spruce pine. The moisture content in standing trees is influenced by lateral and vertical position within the tree, age of tree, site quality, geographical location, and season of year. The hygroscopicity of the wood of southern pines is discussed. Volumetric shrinkage is not only dependent on specific gravity and fiber saturation point but also on extractive content.
