Moisture problems in flush garage doors are causing grave concern among manufacturers. Four improved types of door sections were exposed to typically, humid interior conditions of 80 percent relative humidity and 72?F, and typical northern winter temperatures of 0?F. Tests showed that the temperature gradient across these door sections redistributed the normal moisture present in a door which caused bowing toward the outside. This bowing is commonly reduced to acceptable levels by the use of steel braces. Internal condensation is more of a long term problem which causes deterioration of the door after several year’s exposure. These tests demonstrated that vapor, barriers applied to the interior skin or solid plastic foam cores effectively reduced internal condensation. Venting was less effective since it usually permitted the moist air to enter the door cavity, and since it reduced the insulating properties of the door.
