In view of the possibility of an emergency shortage of synthetic resin for the manufacture of particleboard, developments in the use of other materials as binders–calcined gypsum, portland cement and magnesite or magnesium oxy-sulphate cement–are described. Combinations of sawdust and portland cement always produce relatively weak and brittle boards but may be useful in concrete for farm buildings. Wood shavings can be bonded with cement to produce blocks and building slabs. Excelsior bonded with inorganic binders for board- like porous slabs is a growing industry; standard sizes, properties, methods of manufacture, uses and competition for excelsior slabs are described. The development of a machine for producing fibers from solid wood sawmill waste as well as out of cordwood has opened up new possibilities in the manufacture of gypsum wallboards by eliminating the paper faces.
