New phenolic formulations for bonding higher moisture content OSB panels

Bonding wood at higher moisture contents would generate substantial benefits for manufacturers of oriented strandboard panels, such as improved dryer capacity and better panel dimensional stability. In pursuit of this objective, several aqueous phenolic dispersions were prepared and successfully spray-dried under laboratory and commercial conditions. These spray-dried phenolic dispersions were modified to produce the desired properties for bonding wood with higher moisture contents and showed a consistent advantage over control resins in giving a high percent wood failure in model bonding experiments.
