Improvements in finishing considered are high-temperature drying, spraying equipment, finish formulation impregnation, and replacement of wood carving by molded plastics. Temperatures from 180? to 275?F are used to dry lacquer systems in 6 minutes. Use of airless spray systems and low-pressure air caps reduces over spray, therefore reducing costs. Polyurethane, urea alkyd, and vinyl resin formulation offer excellent finishes for specific uses. Impregnation by monomers which are catalyzed in place provide great depth to the finish. High impact polystyrene molds are replacing more costly wood carvings now that colors can be matched to blend plastic and wood together in the completed article.
