Nondestructive testing of wood can have a real influence on the entire forest products industry, and the market it serves. It is necessary to have known strength values of lumber so a more efficient and engineered product can be available from the industry. Simplification of grades and better applications of lumber can help a great deal to change product specifications. For example, machine grading can at least double the availability of the stronger grades of lumber, vastly simplify the problem of grade standardization, take the guess work out of stress values, and so end the need of down grading so much lumber and setting up such large safety factors. Building codes can be then simplified to allow use of a greater amount of lumber.
