A sink-float bark-wood separation system for aspen chips is described. Juvenile and mature whole trees, 9-,10-, and 30-year-old trees, respectively, were cut and chipped monthly and processed in the system. Roundwood from 30-year-old trees stored for 6 months was also chipped and processed. Described are: whole tree bark percentages, bark and wood density differences, and seasonal moisture contents of bark and wood. Observations indicate the sink-float wood-bark separation system works for aspen of all ages. Storing winter-cut wood increased the effectiveness of the separation.
