Some of the limitations of the standard linear expansion (LE) test were examined. On the basis of cyclic exposure testing of commercial particleboards and medium density fiberboards, recommendations were developed that would reduce the upper relative humidity (RH) level of the standard test from 90 percent to 80 percent, and would determine the LE by multiplying the LE coefficient obtained from ovendrying LE specimens with the moisture content difference obtained from small cubes conditioned in desiccators at two different RH levels. The correlation between the calculated LE values and those measured was good for the exposure interval of 47 to 81 percent RH.
