Operational Variables in Press Drying Eastern Hemlock

Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis L.) was press-dried to determine its suitability as a laminate for door corestock and sandwich construction. Sapwood, heartwood, and edge- and flat-grained material was press-dried at pressures of 50 to 200 psig and temperatures of 140 to 180C. Regression equations were developed which relate change in moisture content and change in thickness with pressure, temperature, and time. The results indicate that 3/4-inch hemlock can be dried in short time periods (40 min.) without degrade.
