An optical comparator consisting of a modified microscope with two microscope tubes with eyepieces and objective lenses, a stage with, specimen support, and a dial gauge reading to 1/10,000 inch, can be used to measure linear expansion or contraction of wood products. The instrument reduces the need for calibration and eliminates the uncertainties associated with measurements requiring physical contact between specimen and gauge.
