Outlook for Forest Products Trade and Imports

The 1976 U.S. trade in wood products (imports plus exports) amounted to 35.9 percent of domestic industrial wood products production. The United States, the world’s leading importer of timber products, in 1974 imported $4.3 billion of timber products. Forest products imports have increased sharply in the last 15 years, both in volume and value. Last year imports were equivalent to 2.7 billion cubic feet of timber, equal to one-fifth of domestic roundwood production. Forest Service projections indicate rising imports by the year 2000, ranging from 3.1 billion cubic feet with constant relative price assumptions, to nearly 5 billion cubic feet with rising relative prices. Canada is expected to continue as the principal source of U.S. wood products imports.
