Overlays for Southern Pine Substrates

The performance of five overlay systems after two years’ exposure was better on phenolic-bonded southern pine particleboard than on southern pine plywood. An acrylic overlay was rated good to excellent on both substrates with dirt accumulation being the major defect. Thick kraft overlays performed well especially when a durable resin system was incorporated into the medium-density overlay. Poor performance was obtained with a vulcanized fiber overlay. The major defects over the kraft overlays were telegraphing, peeling, checking and cracking. Brush coating samples with a water-repellent preservative prior to overlaying did little to reduce attack by microorganisms.
