In general, only findings published during 1963,1964, and 1965, if they have not been previously digested in recent English-language texts, are considered. One hundred- and ninety-eight papers of a research nature from major world journals in wood science and technology and Forestry Abstracts, plus personal communication with researchers known to be active, were used in the review of the field. Information from the above sources has been abstracted and listed under subject-matter categories, an outline of which is given below. The pace of research during the period in question seemed to be accelerating, with a substantial amount of research in application. Research on abrasive belt machining and chipping headrigs was prominent in this respect. Further, research was found to be extending into areas such as wood anatomy in relation to mechanical failure and the disk defibration process; areas which have been largely overlooked in the past. Subjects covered by this review include: History and general texts, properties of wood, analysis of cutting process, orthogonal cutting, inclined cutting, and peripheral milling.
