A proposal has been made for an international standardization of the dynamometric pendulum tests used in studies of the sawing of woods. Basically, the maximum pressure that wood can exert against any intrusive object, such as a cutting tool, is initially no greater than its resistance to compression or bending. Tests are reported on many species of wood with discussion of fiber severance in sawing or shaping, effect of chip formation on fiber severance, cleavage in chip formation, lateral pressure effects, energy in the sawdust, particle velocity in relation to gullet design, and an all-angle severance test tool.
