Pentachlorophenol (PCP), an important wood preservative, has been detected at the parts per billion level in the urine of nonoccupationally exposed human populations in widely scattered locations. It has not been established whether this is a natural state of affairs, the result of metabolism of other chlorinated compounds, or the result of PCP intake. Published information supporting each of these possibilities is discussed.
