The mildewcidal properties of six commercially available chemicals were evaluated as additives at three concentrations in a semitransparent oil-base wood stain. Outdoor exposure data on test specimens at three locations with distinctly different climates (Mississippi, Washington, and Wisconsin) showed that 10 percent pentachlorophenol was essentially 100 percent effective ss a mildewcide after 18 months of exposure and 64 percent effective after 30 months. Addition of 5 percent pentachlorophenol to the semitransparent stain resulted in 69 percent and 41 percent mildewcidal effectiveness after 18 and 30 months exposure, respectively; copper naphthenate (1 pct copper metal) gave 65 percent and 51 percent effectiveness. Mildewcide effectiveness varied with climate, with wood substrate, and with chemical concentration. These results show that effective mildewcides will improve appearance of semitransparent stain finishes used on wood for outdoor exposure.
