Performance of Some Blister-Resistant Paints

The history of exterior paint blistering on wood siding is reviewed and the major causes identified. Moisture is common to all blistering problems and results from changes in building design, changes in materials used, building size effects, use of air conditioning, increased humidity production within homes, use of insulation without proper vapor barriers, and increased use of glass. When the causes of blistering problems were recognized by the lumber industry, the first approach at control was through the use of water-repellent treatments which were shown to effectively reduce the pickup of water from outside sources and thereby protect the paint film. Next, studies of blister-resistant paints of oil-base formulation were introduced. Studies of the effectiveness of these paints which also covered their overall performance, appearance, durability, compatibility with various species, and possible limitations are described. Their blister resistance was demonstrated on several softwood lumber siding species and their overall performance and handling characteristics were considered good. For optimum mildew resistance, addition of mildewcide was recommended. As a result of their satisfactory performance, their use is recommended for exterior coatings on wood siding.
