Performance of Southern Pine Plywood During Five Years Exposure to Weather

Phenolic-resin-bonded southern pine plywood painted and exposed to the weather near Madison, Wis., and Gulfport, Miss., showed no glue joint separation after 5 years. Because of nonuniform mold growth on the southern pine panels exposed near Madison, they were less attractive than the Douglas-fir control panels. Some face checking occurred in both species. Southern pine plywood panels overlaid with medium-density phenolic-resin impregnated overlay and painted with two coats of an acrylic-emulsion paint, were in excellent condition after 5 years of weathering at both the northern and southern exposure sites. Mold growth occurred on both species but was heavier on the southern pine, particularly at the southern exposure site.
