pH of Southern Pine Barks

Barks of southern pines are rather acid in nature, with measured pH ranging from about 3.1 to 3.8 and averaging 3.4 to 3.5. Methods of measuring bark pH were investigated, and use of 4 grams of 40-mesh bark in 25 grams of distilled water appears to be a simple and reliable technique. The trees measured indicated an increase in pH with height in the tree, with very little difference between most species.
