This paper presents some physical and mechanical properties of commercially produced cement excelsior board (CEB). The industrial manufacturing process was described. The water absorption and dimensional changes of CEB subjected to water soaking were relatively small compared to other types of wood products. Results of uniform loading, sustained uniform loading, concentrated loading, and compressive strength were reported. The CEB, even after water soaking and redrying, was capable of supporting 200 psf uniform load, and deflection/span ratio was less than 1/240 at 50 psf design load. However, water soaking and redrying increased the deflection of CEB when sustained load was applied. A relationship between bending stiffness and strength was established. Compressive stresses were determined for the CEB to be used as wall panels or concrete formboards.
