The radiation pyrometer is explained with respect to how it can be used in the wood industry. Its advantage for use in veneer dryers is that readings of temperature can be made without touching the wood. The output of the pyrometer can be used to operate controls so the proper temperature can be maintained in an automatic system. A pyrometer having rapid response is useful for scanning platens or other heating equipment for variations such as local hot spots. This report explains what is needed to calibrate for differences of emissivity of surfaces and gives examples of the calculation for determining the emissivity of wood.
