Potential Production: Plywood from Eastern Spruce

Eastern spruce constitutes more than 40 percent of the softwood sawtimber resource in the New England States and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. These species, together with other suitable available softwoods, would form a basis for any prospective structural plywood industry in the region using techniques developed in recent years for plywood production in the Southern States. While the production of softwood plywood in the Northeast is limited to only a few examples, these do provide some insight into the potential conditions and problems of actual processing. Small amounts of spruce veneer are produced in connection with the manufacture of decorative plywood paneling from white pine and various hardwoods and some is produced as low-grade container-type veneer. The high unit value of plywood and its history of increasing consumption would certainly suggest that the spruce sawtimber resource in the Northeast has some utility beyond the attrition mill of a paper company.
