Potential Sources of Wood Fiber in the Northeast

Industry is constantly searching for additional inexpensive sources of wood fiber. As the technology of harvesting, transporting, and converting timber products advances, new sources of raw material become economically available. Potential sources of wood fiber in the Northeast were ranked by their potential for adding to the region’s industrial wood supply. The 100 billion cubic feet of live trees that grow on the commercial forest lands of the region represents the best fiber source. In addition, about 600 million cubic feet of logging residues and 335 million cubic feet of timber from land clearing operations are available each year for recovery and use by local wood processors. The 30 million cubic feet of primary manufacturing residues that are not being used at present are economically unavailable.
