Precompressing Flitches to Improve the Quality of Slicewood

Precompressing flitches of yellow-poplar by 50 percent prior to slicing greatly reduced knife checks in 1/4- and 7/16-inch-thick slicewood cut from them. Some of the 1/4 inch slicewood cut from precompressed flitches was entirely free of knife checks. Precompressing also forced out much free water and so reduced the time required to dry the slicewood.
