An analytic technique based on the finite-element method of structural analysis was developed to predict tensile and shear moduli of mat-formed, homogeneous flakeboard as a function of the properties of its components and selected characteristics of the board itself. Flake orientations in the network model are assigned according to a distribution function-random in the case of a board without directional properties. The method is computerized, and multiple iterations each with a different distribution of flake orientations are accomplished by the Monte Carlo technique, thus producing a distribution and its average of predicted values for the elastic constant. The method has been subjected to verification consisting of comparison of theoretical and experimental values of elastic constants of laboratory-made aspen and Douglas-fir particleboards. Based on experimental averages for the cases of best agreement, the predicted values differed from the experimental values by 2 to 3 percent for tensile moduli and 10 to 13 percent for shear moduli.
