Black cherry, American elm, and white oak 1-inch boards prefrozen at -14?F. for 24 hours and kiln-dried shrunk less than end-matched unfrozen boards. Radial, tangential, and volumetric shrinkage and induced collapse was significantly less in prefrozen black cherry boards than in unfrozen boards. There was no honeycomb. Prefrozen American elm had significantly less shrinkage, but no collapse was evident in either the prefrozen or unfrozen boards. Tangential shrinkage was less in prefrozen white oak. In all three species those pre-frozen boards containing sapwood had a greater shrinkage reduction than boards with little or no sapwood.
