A study of the use of 10 percent pentachlorophenol in grease applied to Michigan woods was part of a research project investigating groundline treatment of posts. Investigated variables included species–northern white cedar, jack pine, quaking, aspen, and American elm–moisture content, amount of preservative applied, and incising. Results from borings indicate cedar and jack pine were successfully treated, aspen and elm were questionable; incising improved treatment, moisture interfered; and a thicker (1/4-inch) layer of preservative was more successful. Service-type exposure is underway.
