Flatsliced walnut face veneer was dried under 10 different conditions and then compared primarily for residual buckle. The most effective method tested was press-drying flatsliced walnut veneer 0.030 inch thick at 230? F and a pressure of 50 pounds per square inch to a moisture content of 6 to 9 percent. Buckle was reduced to about one-third that found in matched sheets dried at 230? F in the roller-conveyor dryer to a moisture content of 5 to 7 percent. Press-drying was also faster by about 30 percent. Press dried veneer had a faint screen pattern and was more brown in color than conventionally dried veneer.
