Some native hardwoods have been neglected in the past. However it has been shown that both American elm and cottonwood can be manufactured into valuable products. Pressure-treated American elm has been used as bridge decking; it is equivalent to other species previously used for this product. American elm has high shock resistance, is moderately dense, and is easily treated. Cottonwood is suggested as a good material for the manufacture of outdoor furniture.
