Historically, timbers in permanent structures were carefully protected from moisture to avoid biological deterioration. More recently, the use of exposed glue-laminated beams and sawn timbers has become common. This is primarily due to a new generation of designers with little training or experience in the use of wood and to the promotional encouragement of wood product producers. The resulting failures have led to many costly repairs and also to an evolution in industry recommendations. This paper discusses the performance of a series of beam protection techniques and modes of failure during a 9-year test exposure, along with examples from buildings in service. Implications of current industry recommendations are also discussed.
