A series of chemicals, some of which are modern agricultural fungicides, were screened in laboratory tests to identify efficient sapstain preventives of low mammalian toxicity. Two compounds, Captan and Folpet, gave the best results, protecting specimens from fungal stain at 0.5 percent concentration, the lowest concentration used. At 1 or 2 percent concentrations they appeared to be equal to or better than sodium pentachlorophenate (Na-PCP). Dithane, PQ8 and PQ10 provided adequate protection at 1 percent and higher concentrations. They were equal to Na-PCP at 1 percent and better than Na-PCP at 2 percent concentrations. Dichlone was satisfactory at 2 and 4 percent concentrations.
