A series of field tests demonstrated that non-microbial sapstains in hardwoods could be prevented by dipping lumber from freshly cut logs in formulations containing either 5 or 10 percent sodium bisulfite. A dip time of 3 to 5 minutes followed by 14 days of diffusion storage was necessary for control or significant reduction of most non-microbial discolorations throughout the sapwood. Sticker staining in ash was never completely controlled.
