Attack by shipworms (Bankia setacea) on log rafts in Vancouver harbor averaged $5000 loss per Davis raft. Rafts in salt water no longer than 3 months were not attacked, but untreated logs 2 feet in diameter can be infested to the point of disintegration in 6 to 9 months. Forty chemicals were tested for lethal effects on adult shipworms. Sodium arsenate sprayed on a raft in dilute solution gave promise of being an effective control. Treatment cost was expected to be $300 per raft.
