With most orders, dimension stock must be put through a rough planing operation, setting the planer 1/32 to 1/16 inch under standard rough thickness. Thus the operator of the cross-cut saw can more readily determine the location of defects, hence speeding this operation, and later when the stock is passed through the straight-line rip, the resulting joint is square and perpendicular to the face, an important factor in securing a proper glue joint. Since it is possible to split boards in the surfacing operation which have too much warp, the operator should lay these boards aside and later send them to a rip saw to be ripped down the middle before surfacing.
