Producing Particle Board By a Continuous Process

Describes a press designed for the continuous production of particle board, with board length limited only by means of handling. Physical properties of the board may be varied to meet end-use requirements. Plant layout needs are given and advantages of this process listed. The press consists of the following synchronized units: 1) a continuous flow type resin mixer where the thermosetting resin, or other additives affecting the properties of the board, is added in liquid form and sprayed at the desired rate into the mass of prepared feed which is violently agitated; 2) a continuous feeder unit; 3) a high-frequency heater for temperatures of 70?C.; 4) a pressure unit compresses the carpet and raises it to a suitable temperature before entering the pressure unit of the press–the final heating stage is effected in the press by the transfer through platens heated to 104? to 145?C.; 5) an automatic sawing unit for trimming and cutting the board as it emerges from the press. With a 7 percent resin (urea formaldehyde) content, the physical properties of the board using planer mill shavings of softwood are: density 0.75, MOR, psi 3500, compression strength, psi 2500, and tensile strength, psi 2600.
