Where very slender turnings of any considerable length. are being machined between centers in any type of lathe, the end pressure which is necessary to hold a turning between centers always has a tendency to buckle the turning, or spring it out of a straight line. Any vibrating tendency set up by cutter thrust on an automatic shaping lathe automatically com bines with such buckling tendency, thereby increasing the chance of trouble in this respect. Automatic shaping lathes may be fitted with a special hollow chuck in order to overcome this trouble. The hollow chuck employed has self-centering V-shaped jaws. The jaws close upon and grip the slender turning close to the cut being made. Tailstock pressure is then released, whereupon the jaws of the hollow chuck, revolving with the material, hold it firmly without any end pressure.
