Dipping operation of brown stain control in lumber drying was replaced by a simple spray-type system using the old dip tank as a catch-all and enclosing the spray in a box. Two spray lines were used on the top and two on the bottom, with two end sprays. A double bank of ten filters of the pot type was installed between the storage tank and the pump. Sodium fluoride with anti-stain added gave absolute control with no drop in production and no brown discoloration with a cost of 6.7 cents per thousand board feet. If no anti-stain is added, the cost would be 5.5 cents per thousand; but in this case all loads must be stickered each evening during severe conditions. No toxic effects from the sodium fluoride have been found but care is needed to supply rubber gloves and washing facilities for the workmen. The spray should be vented.
